Ok, I’m not gonna lie, I went into this game with the opinion that it was just some over-rated, high class, addictinggames.com -ish type of flash game but boy was I wrong, within three levels of playing I found my self contemplating where to place my next green little fella strategically and the addiction just grew and grew. Truly a nice puzzle game with a VERY nice game and definitely worth taking a look at. 4.5/5

Indie Game : The Weekend

In honor of the amazing documentary Indie Game: The Movie I decided to spend some quality time playing the three games featured in the doc this weekend. I seriously wonder how many viewers were motivated to pick up the games because of the movie. I was one of them. Before watching IGTM, I was definitely curious about playing the games, but with so many games on my backlog already I put the idea off. Seems like the timing was finally perfect to get a chance to play them. Below is a very brief recap on my thoughts on each one.

Braid

The indie darling by Jonathan Blow has received universal acclaim, is one of the best selling downloads on multiple platforms and was the precursor to the whole indie game movement, yet why had I not played it? I think I might have been intimidated by my lofty expectations. I didn’t want to be disappointed and when I finally got around to playing through the game, sure and behold, I wasn’t! It’s easy to see why Braid is perceived as one of the best games of all time. It’s just adorable. A simple storyline about a lovelorn boy looking for his missing girlfriend. Yes, the story has been told a million times before, basically in all the Mario games, but there’s a surprising twist at the end. I casually played the game, I just wanted to take in the experience without stressing over figuring out every single puzzle. This is what I appreciated most about Braid, although a puzzler/platformer, the game allows you to progress through the story without having to complete the puzzle on any given level, but you’re motivated to. I think it’s a fair assessment that Braid is a little pretentious, but I thoroughly enjoyed it because or despite of it.

Fez

The newest of the three games in the movie, Fez finally released shortly after Indie Game The Movie started screening in theaters across the country. It would have been great to have seen the completed project documented in the movie, but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way. I can honestly say that the finished product is nothing short of outstanding. It’s baffles me that two people could develop such a creative, rich and deep gaming experience. Phil Fish must be a hybrid between mad scientist, deranged wizard and starving artist because he’s crafted one of the most inspired games that I’ve played in a very long time. Whats unique about Fez is the mechanic on the 2D/3D perspective. You can alter your perspective to help you uncover secrets, paths, and platforms to help you ascend in your journey. I’m not entirely sure what the end goal of the game is because I’m from from getting there, but a huge component of the game is to collect little golden floating cubes hidden in hard to reach areas and secret locations that in return open up new areas in the world to explore and collect even more cubes. Thats it. It’s fun, super fun, and addicting, trust me.

Super Meat Boy

Without a doubt the most painful of the three games. But painful in a good way. The full title of the game should have been Super Meat Boy : Prepare to Die (Over And Over Again). I’m convinced that Team Meat are sadists. Ingenious sadists who device thousands of scenarios on how to kill the player. The result is a hell of a lot of enjoyable fun. So I guess that makes me a sadist. I’m in good company! In the movie Edmund McMillen talked about how he wanted his team to create the type of game that their 13 year old selves would be huge fan boys of. Mission accomplished. Quite easily my favorite game on this list, it’s one that is full of unprecedented fun and challenge minus pretension. There were many levels where I was stuck on because I couldn’t get past a particularly nuanced jump and I died maybe 30-50 times before I could get passed it. What I found interesting about those deaths was that I never got frustrated. This is strange because I have a tendency to thrown my controller on the floor over lesser offenses to my intelligence or problem solving skills. This speaks volumes about the quality of the game. Super Meat Boy has spawned legions of fans that years down the road will look back at Super Meat Boy as one of the biggest icons in gaming, right up there with our favorite Italian plumber.

Indie Game -- a movie about the creative process

I watched a great documentary last night about the guys behind games such as “Fez” and “Super Meat Boy.” Now, I’m not a gamer in the least, though I do have a nostalgic spot for the days of the orignal “Super Mario Bros.” and “Legend of Zelda.” So this doc appealed to me on that level, but mainly because it’s really a story about the creative process — the moments of inspiration and despair, the drive to make something that connects with people, and the inevitable let down after it’s all over and you start on the next idea.

It also shows how the online world is completely changing how creative people can share their ideas with others much more easily without having to deal with a big game company to produce their game. These guys are in control of their creations, and get all the accolades and criticism that come along with it. There is a great scene where Phil Fish (the creator of “Fez”) addresses the fact that his game has taken years and years to develop and still hasn’t come out. He was getting a lot of flack on the internet for it. His response was basically that it’s just him and one other guy doing EVERYTHING. The creative, the programming, the business end, etc. I could definitely relate to that coming off of book 1 of Korra and people already demanding to see Book 2 –– and we have hundreds of people working on the show! But it still takes a long time to make anything of quality, whether it’s a video game or a tv show or a book.

The thing that surprised me most was how personal these games were to their creators. The way they talked about creating something that connects to people is the same way I feel about creating stories in the Avatar world. These games are an expression of who their creators are. I loved the heart-breaking story behind “Super Meat Boy” — he’s just a red, fleshless square that must survive the harsh elements of the world as he tries to reunited with his girlfriend, who is made of bandages. Edmund McMillen, the creator, basically described it as a metaphor for his relationship with his wife. On the surface, it looks like silly, fun entertainment, but there is a deeper meaning behind it, which is why I think it ended up becoming a really popular game. People relate to this little hunk of flesh that is easily damaged by the outside world.

Create fearlessly. Follow your passion. Persevere through the difficult times. This is what I learned from a little documentary about indie video games. And now I want to play them too!

This is seriouslylike the best review of, “Indie Game: The Movie,” I’ve read to date.
